Fiona Musana

Executive Director

Fiona Musana(43) is the Executive Director, ALI Media Fellowship Programme. Her current role covers Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. Prior to taking up this position, Fiona Musana was the Engagement Director for Greenpeace Africa, having joined the organisation in 2009 as communications manager before being appointed communications director three months later.  

 

Before she joined Greenpeace, Fiona  was the Country Director for Nonviolent Peaceforce Sri Lanka, based in Colombo, leading a 50-strong global team. She also worked with German International Development (GIZ) in various capacities including as donor coordinator, senior programme officer and programme office. Her tenure with GIZ included a 7-month stint at the GIZ headquarters in Eschborn, Germany. 

 

She started off as a TV presenter (economics, religion and population) and assistant producer for Uganda’s public broadcaster UTV and as a columnist for Tanzania’s The Arusha Times newspaper and wrote ‘the Diary of a Single Mother”  for the Uganda Observer newspaper for 2 years.

 

During her tenure with Greenpeace, Fiona was appointed as a mentor for the global future leaders programme. In 2012, she received the recognised MARCOM Leadership and Community Welfare Award for her work across the continent. A motivational speaker, Fiona has been recognised in various high-level fora for her role in promoting development communications and highlighting the need for equity and equality going beyond gender and race.

 

A permanent resident of South Africa, and Ugandan by birth, Musana has over 15 years experience in communications, international development,programme management, capacity-building  and community development. Widely travelled, Fiona has worked in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, DRC, Cameroon, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Germany.

 

“A global citizen who is proudly African”, Fiona lives in Johannesburg, Gauteng with her 8 year old daughter Jade.  She loves travelling, cooking and learning about different cultures.
