MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TO WIRES, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL MEDIA

Africa Leadership Initiative launches prestigious Media Fellowship Programme

Cultivating Financial Excellence and Leadership in African Media

Johannesburg, June 9th 2015 -- Today, the African Leadership Initiative (ALI) will officially launch the ALI Media Fellowship Programme and present its inaugural class of 24 Fellows in Johannesburg.

The Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI) has developed the innovative Fellowship Programme for distinguished professionals from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa who have the ability – through their positions of leadership – to influence and enhance the future of financial journalism in Africa and beyond.

The ALI Media Fellowship programme is uniquely poised to bolster financial and business journalism on the continent, while underscoring the advancement of professional, ethical and values-based leadership within the financial media sphere in Africa.

ALI South Africa founder, Isaac Shongwe said: “We are excited to be launching this highly competitive fellowship that was designed to inspire key change-makers to take a lead in determining Africa’s financial and economic narrative. The first group of 24 ALI Media Fellows are already outstanding leaders in media, governments and NGOs across Africa. I believe they will set the benchmark for in-depth analysis and media coverage beyond the continent.”

The prestigious ALI Media Fellowship Programme will serve visionary leaders who are nurturing new solutions to promote the financial media landscape in Africa and who will use financial data and reporting to address pressing development challenges on the continent. The ALI Media Fellowship is designed to provide a sustainable platform for building capacity and providing long-term impact in improving financial reporting and data dissemination.

The ALI Media Fellowship will also be a forum for managing directors, editors and other media leaders to hear from leading international practitioners, exchange ideas, and examine new trends to help them shape a media sector that will play a significant role both in Africa’s future economic growth, and in how the continent responds to globalisation, new technologies and new human development opportunities.

The ALI Media Fellows will benefit from specialised learning opportunities covering financial journalism, business, economics, data analysis and public policy, with an emphasis on ethics and social impact. ALI Media Fellows will also receive coaching and have opportunities to work on collaborative projects.

Note to the Editor:

  1. ALI - The Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI) was conceived in 2003 as a Pan-African initiative and born out of a belief that Africa’s future lies in investment into the development of effective, values-based and enlightened African leaders. The purpose of ALI is to develop the next generation of values-based African leaders, who are capable of guiding and leading their countries as they struggle to align the demands of globalisation with local visions of “a good society”. The historical and current problems faced by the African continent are well known. ALI aims, in a significant way, to reverse this negative trend. ALI has programmes in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda); West Africa (Ghana and Nigeria) and South Africa.  All of these programmes have been delivered in partnership with the Aspen Institute in Colorado. ALI currently has 300 fellows in Africa: 180 in South Africa; 60 in East Africa and 60 in West Africa.
