Moshoeshoe Monare

Deputy Editor: Mail & Guardian

Moshoeshoe Monare joined the Mail & Guardian as its Deputy Editor in 2014. He moved to this publication from The Sunday Independent, where he was the Editor. Under his editorship, the Sunday Independent’s key distinctive coverage was politics and used its analysis to drive and influence dialogue. Before he joined The Sunday Independent in 2012, he spent a year driving the news coverage of The Star as Executive Editor. He was Group Political Editor of Independent Newspapers, where he led the political coverage of the group’s daily and weekly titles. He started his career as a freelancer for, and later as an intern at the Pretoria News in 1996. He continued with the education beat for The Star, public broadcaster SABC and the Sunday Times until he joined The Sunday Independent as Senior Writer in 2004.

 

In 2004, he rejoined The Star as a Political Correspondent and the Independent Newspapers’ political bureau as one of the Political Correspondents. He was promoted to Group Deputy Political Editor in 2006 and took over as Group Political Editor in 2008.

 

He studied journalism at the then Technikon Northern Gauteng (now the Tshwane University of Technology), and later studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and completed a Bachelor of Arts (honours) and Postgraduate Diploma in Media studies and Journalism. He also undertook a Management Advancement Programme at Wits Business School. He is currently studying towards an LLB degree with Unisa.

 

He is a member of South African National Editors’ Forum council. He is also a member of the adjudication panel for the Press Ombudsman.
