Ufrieda Ho is a Johannesburg-based freelance journalist. She has a National Diploma in Journalism from the Pretoria Technikon (now the University of Tshwane) and a Bachelor’s degree (honours) in Anthropology from the University of the Witwatersrand.

 

Ho contributes to a range of magazines and national newspapers as well as to some corporate titles. She writes on a wide range of issues, covering everything from health to lifestyle and environment. Ho’s interest is in people’s stories and in the extraordinary layers and texture revealed in the ordinary.

 

Her journalism career has spanned over 20 years, spent in newsrooms and as a full-time freelancer. She believes South Africa is the perfect place to record, document and tell the unfolding story of this continent.

 

She is the author of the memoir Paper Sons and Daughters (Picador Africa 2011), about growing up as a Chinese in apartheid South Africa.

 

She was the winner of the Anthony Sampson Foundation Award for Journalism in 2007.
